Rivers House sacks LG council, calls for fresh election
Bolaji Ogundele, Port Harcourt - 10.12.2009

THE Rivers State House of Assembly has dissolved the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area on grounds of insecurity.

The Rivers State governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, had written a request to the state’s legislature to effect the dissolution, following the unrest forced on the council area by the activities of its executive and legislature.

Presenting the call for dissolution to the Assembly, the Leader of the House, Honourable Chidi Lloyd, said the call became necessary as a result of happenings in the local government area.

According to him, the inability of the chairman of the council, Mr. Chris Ochije, and the councillors to understand each other has threatened the peace of the council.

“From the reports available to us from the local government committee, it is obvious that it has become impracticable for the council chairman to work with the councillors.

“I hear that the councillors have been lodged somewhere in a hotel in Port Harcourt for up to five months,” Lloyd told the Assembly.

Pronouncing the dissolution, the Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Tonye Harry, called on the executive to appoint a caretaker committee to take over the affairs of the council, pending when the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) would conduct another election into the council.
